HOMBITAN® AFDC101: A brilliant low nano, titanium dioxide pigment

Across the cosmetics, beauty and personal care sector there is a subtle but discernible shift occurring in the formulation choices of some of the world’s best-known brands. A growing number of companies are now looking to source titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigments that have a low nano content – but can still deliver a flawless finish in concealers, eyeshadows, foundations, face powders, and lipsticks.

The lowest nano TiO2 concentration levels in the industry

With a scientifically proven nano particle fraction of less than 10% by number* – the lowest nano-threshold of anatase in the TiO2 industry – HOMBITAN® AFDC101 is a high purity, uncoated, pigment that has been developed with the needs of cosmetic formulators and product stewardship, quality and lab managers in mind.

Better opacity performance than standard white grades

Offering low nano concentration levels, which traditional anatase pigments cannot compete with, HOMBITAN® AFDC101 also beats standard anatase grades when it comes to opacity performance, thanks to its very narrow particle size distribution. Crucially, HOMBITAN® AFDC101 can also be engineered to meet defined application requirements because of the unique way it is made.

Optimized to reflect selected wavelengths of light

HOMBITAN® AFDC101 pigment is produced using an innovative enhanced crystal-size-control-technology that gives Venator the ability to manipulate crystal size and particle distribution. Through the use of this proprietary process (the subject of a pending patent application), Venator’s experts can engineer TiO2 to fall within specific nano particle parameters - fine-tuning grades to meet precise formulation needs.

HOMBITAN® AFDC101 pigment can be used as a white, natural-identical mineral colorant - either on its own or in conjunction with color pigments. Dispersing rapidly into formulations, HOMBITAN® AFDC101 pigment is ideal for use in a variety of cosmetic products. It can also be used aqueous systems such as creams, which use water as a wetting agent. HOMBITAN® AFDC 101 pigment meets the world’s most rigorous regulatory requirements and is produced in line with multiple quality standards including: ISO 9001 (quality); ISO 14001 (environment) and OHSAS 18001 (health and safety). Additionally, it fulfils standards for natural cosmetics like ISO 16128 (natural cosmetics); and ECOCERT / COSMOS. It also satisfies Kosher and Halal requirements.

HOMBITAN® AFDC101 is also suitable for use in pharmaceutical applications in the production of tablets, gelatin capsules, nutraceuticals and dietary supplements.

Venator’s work continues in the field of ultra-low nano TiO2. Using its patented Enhanced Crystal Size Controlled Technology, the team is now working on a new HOMBITAN® grade for the cosmetics industry - HOMBITAN® AC301 which will replace its HOMBITAN® AFDC300 pigment. This product is an amphiphilic multipurpose grade, suitable for customized applications in high-end colored cosmetics and is due for launch in 2022.

*The nano-content of <10 % nanoparticles by number is calculated by using the scientifically proven correlation between SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) measurements and a physical method.
